PERSONALITY:

At base, Reki is a deeply wounded person who carries around a lot of guilt. Her experiences have not often been good and it's left its mark on her. Used to being an object of suspicion, veneration or uncomfortable interest, she's taken all that and refocused it into presenting a very specific kind of persona.

It's ironic...when I put on that fake smile, that's when they tell me i'm a good little Haibane.

This is the persona of a good Haibane, a good person and a good teacher, not in a conventional way (in fact she's rather informal with just about everyone and is exactly the kindof younger, hipper teacher a lot of kids would rather have) but in a way that she believes will make her useful and helpful to the maximum number of people. She appears as the Cool Big Sis type: cool under pressure, worldly, hip, somewhat mischevious but kind to those under her aegis. She doesn't lose her temper easily, but instead replies back with biting wit. She smiles laconically even when she'd rather scream.

I guess you'll never know, Rakka...how very jealous I was of you.

This is not in itself a bad thing, except for that her motivations for this are twisted. Reki sincerely believes that she doesn't care for others but is really acting good to gain a measure of redemption for the sins she knows she committed and the ones she suspected she did. With this will come a mixed admiration and jealousy for those who appear to be acting from the good of their hearts.

And why did I do it? Because all the time I was thinking that maybe, just maybe, God might come down and forgive me!!

In fact, Reki's capable of profound acts of caring. However each one she counts as part of her mental debt to God. If he considers it repaid, he hasn't let her know yet. Over the course of her story arc she'll start to assume some of the caring she pretends to exhibit, becoming the mask as it were.

This world is full of idiots.

The necessity to escape scrutiny has informed her view of the greater issues of mutantkind. She's sympathetic to the cause of mutant liberation, but having spent a while among the Morlocks, she can't fathom a world in which they're on the top of the heap. She knows that the mobs with their pitchforks would be just waiting for it. Therefore she advocates for concealment whenever possible.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Small, nonfunctional wings on her back, black. They're naturally dark black, and have a faint bloody, bitter smell. She dies them, making them grey, and does what she can to cover up their smell.

Her power is the ability to animate whatever she paints or draws into sophisticated projections, much like the hard light projected in the Danger Room and, as such, capable of real force, though they can't apply lethal force (though they are capable of pushing someone into a lethal obstacle). These projections are limited in their size to about eight by eight feet and require her absolute attention, dissipating rapidly if she receives a psychic shock. Their strength is largely determined by the detail and concentration she puts into drawing them.

AU HISTORY: Reki started her story dreaming. She was walking along railroad tracks, stung by cold winds. There were small stones under her feet and she remembered wanting to become one of them, heartless, cold, invulnerable. In an abandoned building in eastern Europe, she woke up. Feverish and weak, the wings dormant in her back ripped their way out of her shoulders. She passed out from pain and blood loss. A local discovered her there and she was medevaced away to the local hospital. When she awoke, she was briefly a local celebrity: the teenage angel with no memory. Though she could speak and knew the state of the world, she knew nothing of her past.

The appearance of people with wings and halos like hers was, unbeknownst to her, becoming increasingly common. These people were always mutants, always had amnesia like hers, always had small, nonfunctional wings, which grew out of their backs shortly after waking, in addition to their other powers and were always between the ages of about eleven and eighteen. Fortunately they weren't alone. Doctor Washi heads the Guri Institute, a small institution attached to a rural hospital in Hokkaido which is dedicated to helping these people, nicknamed 'haibane' for their usually grey wings. Progress in solving the mystery of their appearance has been slow, but as for helping the haibane themselves, they have a usually good track record. These success stories are a boon to them, as the Institute is often financially struggling and relies on charity and very limited government funding (charities designed to help only mutants being not very popular anywhere).

For a while, Reki was happy. She found a name (from her dream), a few friends, her first boyfriend (another Haibane named Hyouko) and a caretaker in the person of an older haibane named Kuramori. Kuramori was gentle and kind and taught Reki how to draw and paint. But her physical condition had always been fragile and on a day like any other, she overexerted her powers in a test and vanished in a column of light.

This was the beginning of Reki's decline. She began lashing out at the people around her, translating her grief into anger. Several times this devolved into actual physical fights and orderlies had to be called to break it up, a rare thing in the normally quiet institute. She had become fed up with the whole Institute and persuaded Hyouko that they should run away together. They took her scooter and vanished in the night. Still minors, they could be brought in, and when the search party came, they fled into the bushes by the roadside. Trying to scramble away when spotted, Hyouko was hit by a car.

His injuries were grave. Several broken bones, internal injuries, and worst of all, a cracked skull. The brain damage he suffered made his eventual recovery much less likely. Washi forbid the two to see each other. At this point Reki was fast approaching adulthood and though she had few legal rights, seeing as her first birthday was officially only a few years ago, the foundation wasn't about
to keep her against her will, especially when she was such an obvious problem case. She bid farewell to the few friends she had left there and went to Tokyo, to hopefully leave her past behind. Yet she couldn't shake her feeling of guilt, and though her paintings became well known on the indie artist scene, she found she disliked the attention it brought her. Feeling an urge to do good works to assuage the guilt she hadn't ever really gotten rid of, she went underground, acted as a teacher to the younger Morlocks and brought news and supplies down from above. Her black, blood-smelling wings weren't an impediment among them and thus she began to relax a bit, if not heal.

Eventually some of the younger morlocks ended up going to the Xavier Institute, an idea which piqued her interest immediately. Teaching the next generation of mutants...surely if she did well at that, the feeling of guilt and nightmares would end?

SAMPLE
1ST PERSON SAMPLE: Good morning bright eyed, bushy tailed (no Squirrel Girl, this isn't about you), creepily Stepford Smiling pupils and assorted less enthusiastic types.

I know some of you in my class read this. Lucky you. That said: if you're taking this because it's required, and you hate art, feel free to turn in stick figures or dongs or stick figures with dongs. I don't care. I'll give you a barely passing grade. But don't disrupt anyone else while they're working. Remember, my mutation lets me animate anything I draw and this room is full of sketchbooks. I'll make the Carrot Monster kick you out. Can you imagine how humiliating that would be, getting thrown out on your butt by a giant, bright carrot? People would make Bugs Bunny jokes at you for the whole rest of the year.

So don't do it. Live and let live.
